Vodou (auch bekannt als Voodoo) ist in Haiti allgegenwärtig. In Haiti ist der Vodou eine vom Großteil der Bevölkerung ausgeübte obwohl erst seit 2003 offiziell anerkannte Religion. Er ist nicht nur Kult, sondern hat Einfluss auf sämtliche Aspekte des Lebens und verleiht so dem Alltäglichen einen Sinn. Die bildlichen Inszenierungen des Fotografen Johnathan Watts, ein Beitrag der haitianischen Ethnologin Rachel Beauvoir-Dominique und Interviews mit Marianne Lehmann und einem Vodou-Priester bieten einen Zugang zur tieferen Bedeutung des Vodou: das Gedenken an die Sklaven und ihr Ringen um Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit. Marianne Lehmann, eine Schweizerin, die 1957 nach Port-au-Prince kam, sammelt seit über 30 Jahren Vodou-Objekte. Der Katalog stellt mehr als 300 Exponate aus der Sammlung Lehmann vor, die weltweit erstmals in einer Ausstellung des Musée dethnographie de Genève (MEG) in Zusammenarbeit mit der Fondation pour la préservation, la valorisation et la production dOEuvres culturelles haïtiennes (FPVPOCH) gezeigt wurden.
